The former American athlete bid farewell to his professional career in style, playing his last match at the 2025 United Cup alongside his teammates. Yesterday, Kudla and Desirae Krawczyk defeated Czechia’s Gabriela Knutson and Patrik Rikl by 7-5, 6-0, in the mixed doubles semifinal event. Post-victory, he made a surprising social media post announcing his retirement from the sport he played professionally for many years.

“Thank you Tennis, This journey has come to an end. I want to thank everyone who made this ride something special for me, no matter how big or small the role in my life. Every memory will be something that I cherish forever and will always be proud of,” wrote Kudla in an IG post sharing his life’s exclusive moments associated with tennis.

This American ATP star’s retirement saddened his colleague Frances Tiafoe. The latter shared Kudla’s retirement post on his IG story with a heartwarming caption. “Dk man congrats on a dope career. I really appreciate you, bro. More than you can ever imagine. You truly helped me believe that being a pro can be a reality. Especially coming out of the DMV where there is only a handful guys to ever do it. Thanks for giving me game and support as a youngin and still to this day. Nothing but love for you baldhead Kudla,” wrote Tiafoe revealing his close bond with Denis Kudla.

Now Kudla, slightly older than Tiafoe, became a significant character in the latter’s life. The American former ATP star was the first player from the Junior Tennis Championship Center to break into the top 100, which later became an inspirational benchmark for players like Tiafoe. Kudla reached a career-high ranking of ATP number 53 in May 2016 and had a career-high ranking in doubles in August 2018. Notably, the player has won nine Challenger singles, including two doubles titles.

While Tiafoe highly respected the former American player, Kudla admired the ATP number 18’s skills. However, the admiration didn’t grow in one day. In fact, Kudla was quite apprehensive about Tiafoe’s brilliance at the beginning. However, slowly, with Tiafoe’s impressive performance and career growth, his mind changed and those initial doubts transformed into admiration and affection.

When Kudla turned pro, he revisited the Junior Tennis Championship Center as a hero. At that time, Tiafoe was only 13, only a few years away from winning his junior titles and surprising the fraternity. When Kudla met the teenager Tiafoe, his thoughts about the latter’s potential remained skeptical.

“He had that weird technique, weird forehand, I didn’t think his tennis I.Q. was that high, I just never thought that he had the discipline to be top 100 — not from a fitness point of view, but from a decision-making point of view, Decisions on the court are so important and take so much work, so much instruction, so much studying. I didn’t see him doing that,” said Kudla.

However, he soon realized how wrong he was.

Kudla added, “But I was also basing that on the way I did it. I’m definitely more of an overthinker than he is. He’s a lot more natural, a lot more creative, a lot more God-given with his hands, so I was wrong about that as well. I was definitely wrong about a lot of things with him.”
