‘I Have a Very Serious Injury’ – Alexander Zverev Releases His First Statement After Retiring Against Rafael Nadal at the French Open 2022

Things did not go according to the plans of Alexander Zverev yesterday. The German tennis star battling Rafael Nadal in the semis to enter his maiden French Open final. However, his dreams ended after he was forced to retire midway due to a horrible injury that left the German in agonizing pain on the red dirt of Philippe-Chatrier.

During the business end of the second set, the 25-year-old twisted his ankle while trying to make a return. Zverev moved out of the court in a wheelchair, and after a few minutes, he entered the court on crutches to shake hands with Nadal and acknowledge the crowd. After the match, Zverev provided an update on his injury.

The former US Open finalist took to Instagram to update his fans on his injury status. He said, “Hey guys, yeah, very difficult moment for me today on the court. Obviously, fantastic match until happened what happened. Looks like I have a very serious injury but the medical team and doctors are still checking on it and we’ll keep you updated, we’ll let you know as soon as we know more.”

Praising Nadal for his victory, Zverev said, “I want to congratulate Rafa obviously and incredible achievement reaching 14th final. Hopefully, he can go all the way and make some more history but not an easy moment for me today and I’ll keep everybody updated.”

Zverev to rise to the second spot

World Number 1, Novak Djokovic, failed to defend his French Open title after his defeat against Rafael Nadal. As a result, the Serb will drop to the third spot when the ATP rankings are updated after the French Open. Daniil Medvedev and Zverev will move up a place to occupy the first and the second positions, respectively.

Despite the injury not looking good, Zverev will be determined to make a comeback later this season.
