Tommy Haas, the former German tennis player, recognizes the exceptional mentality that sets Novak Djokovic apart from legends like Pete Sampras and Boris Becker. While Sampras and Becker retired from professional tennis at the age of 30, Djokovic continues to shine even at the age of 36. Haas thinks that the hunger that Djokovic has and his unique mindset sets him apart.

Haas highlights that Djokovic’s mentality is that of a teenager. Djokovic’s upbringing during wartime challenges and his dream of providing a better life for his family have shaped his determination. Haas says that this mindset is not something one can learn, it’s a quality that separates Djokovic from the rest.

“Pete Sampras and Boris Becker retired at 30, but Djokovic at 36 is hungry like a teenager, that’s his mentality. When he tells stories about how he grew up during the war and dreamed of giving his family a better life… you can’t learn that you either have it or you don’t,” said Haas while praising Novak Djokovic.

In contrast, Sampras and Becker, while tennis legends of their own time, had different career choices. Their retirements at 30 suggest a different approach and motivation in their tennis journeys.

Djokovic’s hunger for success has helped him throughout his life to win multiple tournaments and make a name for himself. Still going strong at 36, he looks to create more milestones while breaking more records.
