Tennis fans are eagerly waiting for Roger Federer to return to the court at the Australian Open 2021. The Swiss maestro believes that age is just a number for him and wants to make a convincing comeback in Melbourne next year. However, the tennis legend and former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski recently said that it would be a mammoth task for Federer to win a Grand Slam at this age.

“It’s going to be a big ask after 11 months away from the game. For me, he’s looking at Wimbledon. He thinks he can win that again, and Olympic Gold, the only thing he hasn’t done in his career. Australia I think is going to be a big ask as he has not played tennis for so long,” said Rusedski.

Although Rusedski said that Federer could win the upcoming Wimbledon title, he believes that the Swiss player’s chances in Australia are really bleak. Federer is returning to tennis after almost a year, and things won’t be easy for him.

“The next generation coming up is strong and what can Roger bring to the table at the age of 39?” added the former World No.4.

Rusedski also raised concerns about Roger’s fitness. He clearly emphasized that the ‘Next-Gen’ players were also stronger and more fit than Federer. And under such circumstances, it would be tough for him to defeat them consistently.

Rusedski didn’t stop here but also added that Federer could play well in some matches. However, he wasn’t sure whether he would go on to win any Grand Slam titles now.

“Can he play well? Of course, he can. Can he win Slams? I’m not so sure. That’s match point against Djokovic at Wimbledon 2019 will be very tough to deal with. That was his chance to get to 21 Grand Slams and we wait to see if he can get back there again,” continued Rusedski.

Rusedski undoubtedly expressed that Federer should have won the Wimbledon 2019 to take his tally to 21 Grand Slams. He believes that now, it would be much more difficult for him to even enter the finals again.

“When he came back from his last big injury, he had a new racket and big change to his backhand, which helped him get back to the top. He can’t change too much now, but he will think he has a chance to win Wimbledon one more time,” concluded the 47-year-old.

Though Rusedski was critical of Federer, he admitted that he could still win the Wimbledon 2021. Federer’s fans certainly want him to win another Slam and march ahead of Rafael Nadal in the Grand Slam tally.
