The rising tennis player from Bulgaria recently talked about the priceless lessons learned from his mother’s career as a teacher and how her advice has influenced his development as a professional athlete.
Dimitrov’s upbringing was heavily impacted by his parents, Maria and Dimitar, who came from different backgrounds but had a love of athletics. Maria, a former volleyball player and physical education teacher, instilled valuable lessons in her son despite their differing pursuits.

Grigor Dimitrov’s mother’s experience helped him become a better player
Recently, in a conversation with Tennis Channel, the former world-ranked 3rd-ranked player opened up about how his mother has influenced him for the better. He said, “My mom, she always connects with people.“ She knows how to connect with people from very different backgrounds, whatever they’re doing. We often discuss that. She’s like, ‘Oh, I’m trying to motivate these kids by saying this and doing that.’”

In addition, he also highlighted how, as a teacher, her mother has a keen interest in connecting with people and giving them a comfortable space to share their thoughts. Not only that, he was also quite grateful for the lessons he had received from his mother from time to time.
Further, the Bulgarian player stated, “She always tries to connect with people and kind of rattles them; she just wants to get you out of the comfort zone to express yourself and without any judgment. She always wants to see the person from within. And I think this is something that I think has been the biggest trait in a way that my mom has always given me.”

Reflecting on his father’s contrasted temperament, Dimitrov highlighted how this has influenced his tastes and personality. Dimitrov recognized that his two parents have given him experiences that have helped him succeed in a variety of settings. The 32-year-old highlighted how he finds solace and contentment whether he is in the bustle of competitions with other players and officials or when he is alone roaming the desert.
However, just a few days ago, he also shared his mother’s advice that he has always followed on and off the tennis court.

When Dimitrov revealed his mother’s biggest advice
The former world number three, after losing the Miami Open final, opened up about how he has embraced one particular piece of advice from his mother. He stated, “I also think those things are making you a better person. My mom always used to say before being a great champion [you need to] be a great person. This is the thing I have always focused on since I was a kid.”
Further, he also mentioned how, at some point, all the trophies and achievements fade out. In addition, he dwelled on how everyone who is playing tennis is just trying to live their athletic dream.
