John McEnroe isn’t the only one in his family who has picked up a tennis racket to compete on the ATP Tour. Even his younger brother, Patrick McEnroe, made headlines during his participation in various tournaments, like the Davis Cup. While the 7-time singles Grand Slam champion is regarded as one of the greatest players, the younger McEnroe brother couldn’t pull off similar feats on the court.

As the 64-year-old became a much more popular figure in the sport, Patrick was given the tag of ‘John’s brother’. Reminiscing about the same, Patrick recently opened up about the challenges of having a ‘famous’ family member.

Patrick gets candid about his tag of ‘John McEnroe’s brother’

The former American tennis player was featured in the ‘Tennis Channel Inside-In’ podcast show, in which he talked about how both McEnroe brothers were really passionate about the racket sport during their youth. Reminiscing about growing up together, Patrick also opened up about how he and his brother were a part of the Fort Washington tennis academy.

Patrick McEnroe said, “And that’s how I learned how to play where we grew up in Queens, New York, which was sort of a precursor to me even going to the Fort Washington tennis academy. So between that and go into Fort as a kid and participated in the groups and just being around tennis. That was really number one.”

However, as they grew older, it was the elder McEnroe brother who garnered much more attention owing to his Grand Slam titles. While John established himself as a prominent figure, Patrick had to face the challenge of being the younger brother of the American tennis legend.

Patrick McEnroe said, “And in fact, as I got older, and my brother became famous, it was actually more of a challenge being John’s brother, you know, because he was so famous. And because I wasn’t quite as good as him, although I got to be a pro, which, as I’m learning, in my years now at our tennis academy, that in and of itself is hugely difficult to accomplish.” Despite facing the pressure of having a ‘famous’ bother,  Patrick ardently followed the sport, as he also revealed the reason behind the same.

Patrick McEnroe on why he still continued to compete on the tour

According to the former tennis pro’s candid disclosures, it was his love for tennis that drove him to continue his competitive journey. Patrick said, “So, over the years, as I was growing up, I had to like kind of look myself in the mirror a lot and say, ‘Why am I doing this?’ Because I had to deal with a lot of cr*p, you know, being John’s younger brother.”
