This season has been nothing short of a miracle for Ben Shelton. The American tennis star, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at the US Open, has now reached the top 20 spots in the men’s rankings. On top of all this, the 21-year-old has also clinched his first-ever ATP singles title after delivering some phenomenal performances at the Japan Open. But things don’t look good for Shelton anymore.
Even though he has achieved several accolades this season, the current world No. 16 might be going to miss adding another. In doing so, the US Open semifinalist will also be throwing away the opportunity to add $500000 to his prize money, according to his recent social media post.

How can Ben Shelton miss out on whopping prize money?
After his triumphant run at the Japan Open, the American tennis prodigy marked his participation in the hard court event in Vienna. However, the current world No. 16 was thumped in the very first round of the tournament by the Italian, Jannik Sinner.
Even in the Paris Masters, Ben Shelton’s campaign has come to an early end after his first-round defeat against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Many would now have also expected him to compete in the forthcoming Next Gen ATP Finals, but it appears that the 21-year-old might have some other plans.
Ben Shelton’s latest Instagram post suggests that he will next arrive in Australia, which also means he’s most likely not going to play in the ATP Next Gen Finals. While sharing some pictures of himself with his colleague, the American said, “Hard to find words to describe the season I had in my first year out on tour. So here are some of the people I got to share it with that made it special 💙 See y’all down under✌🏽🇦🇺”. However, what does this mean for Shelton?

If he skips the exhibition tennis tournament, Ben Shelton will also miss out on the chance to win a total prize of $5,14,000. It consists of the round-robin, semi-final, and championship match winnings, which are $32,500, $113,500, and $153,000, respectively.
Given his recent form in hard-court events and his rise in rankings, the young tennis sensation would’ve been a clear favorite for the title. However, looking at Shelton’s current state, his participation seems ambiguous.
