It may not sound so convincing but fashion and tennis have always co-existed together. Now, we see young players like Matteo Berrettini and Coco Gauff, embracing their style with pride. However, the precedent was set by tennis legends like Roger Federer and Serena Williams who brought the fashion quotient into the sport.

How did Roger Federer inspire Matteo Berrettini to spice up sports with fashion?

The Swiss Maestro became the center of attraction at this year’s Met Gala with his stunning black and white suit. Moreover, Federer has always carried himself like a true gentleman even on the court.

Observing and learning from him in the background was Italian player Matteo Berrettini. He could not help but admire how Federer showed his fashionable side on the court.

In the book, ‘The Roger Federer Effect’, the author Simon Cambers talks about Berrettini’s admiration for Federer. He stated, “I think he was one of the first to bring fashion into tennis, with Nike and his outfits. I remember him walking on the court with kind of a suit on.”

He was talking about Federer adorning a suit-like outfit for his run at Wimbledon in 2009. Berrettini added, “But he could do whatever he wanted. He won (Grand Slams) like 20 times.”

Berrettini feels Federer’s legacy is a testament to the fact that tennis stars can buck the old tennis traditions with their own unique fashion statement. So, he added, “He could walk naked if he wanted to. I think it’s cool when you have the chance to do something that is cool and sporty, but also a little bit of fashion.”

Now the Italian player is also following the same path as Federer. After getting inspired by him, Berrettini became the global ambassador of Hugo Boss. This is the German clothing brand’s first venture into the sport.
