Tennis has had some massive on-court rivalries in its century-long history. However, one rivalry that has surpassed all of them is between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Often regarded as the greatest players of the game. The two have faced each other 40 times in their careers. Even though Nadal has been the dominant one in the race, a tie between them is still the most looked after the match in every tournament.

Recently, star coach Jose Higueras opened up on Federer’s nature. The former coach of legends, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, called the Swiss maestro unique off-court as well as on-court. He asserted that Roger always keeps the situation light by being funny in every situation. Elaborating on his point further, The Spanish coach recalled the finals of Roland Garros in 2008, where Nadal beat Federer 6-1,6-3,6-0.
Jose Higueras recalls the 2008 Roland Garros final
Higueras recently appeared as a guest in Patrick McEnroe’s podcast, ‘Holding the Court with Patrick McEnroe’. Conversing with Patrick, Jose spoke on many topics ranging from his coaching tenure with Sampras and Federer to the retirement of Juan Partin Del Petro. However, what came to notice was his explanation of Federer’s nature.

Explaining the maestro’s nature, Jose took the example of the 2008 Roland Garros Final. He started by explaining what Federer did after his loss to Rafael Nadal. He said, “I remember when he got killed by Rafa, a different job, and he got 4 games. We had a get together with a bunch of friends of his from Switzerland and other places with 40 people.” “It was new to me. I was so depressed,” he further added.

Amused by listening to this, Patrick laughingly said, “He had a celebration after getting his ass kicked in the final.”
The star coach ended by saying, “My point is, he was so unique.”

Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer at the 2008 Roland Garros
Playing against each other 16 times before, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were once again set to give their all in the title match of the 2008 Roland Garros. Facing a loss to Nadal just twenty days earlier in Hamburg, Federer looked in no mood to go through the same disappointment once again. However, an in-form Nadal showed no mercy, taking just 1 hour 48 mins to stun the top-seeded Roger Federer 6-1,6-3,6-0.
