When Roger Federer used to play in major tournaments, people would never expect a tantrum or an outburst. Everybody remembers the Swiss Maestro being calm and composed on the court. He was always praised for his on-court conduct. However, the former world number 1 wasn’t always as calm as he was during his professional tennis career. When he started out as a novice, he would have frequent outbursts and anger issues. Peter Lundgren, an old coach of Federer, recently provided testimony to this fact.

The mighty Federer had serious problems that needed to be dealt with when he was a younger player. Smashing rackets and cursing during games were his ways of venting out his frustration. But the Swiss player realized his folly and aimed to become a better-behaved player to improve his career.

Former coach spills the beans on Federer’s anger

Peter Lundgren is a former tennis professional and coach. He has worked with many notable figures in the tennis world including Roger Federer. In a recent interview with Blick, a Swiss-German news outlet, Lundgren recalled how it was to train a young Federer. As per him, Federer was pretty brash and difficult to deal with.

Lundgren recalled the Swiss having problems controlling his temper. However, he realized that he had to change his behavior in order to become a great player.

It wasn’t easy with him at the beginning. He had a lot of temper and showed it too often in games. But he quickly realized that he had to change. He learned extremely quickly and always found a way to solve problems.” Lundgren told Blick..

Kevin Walters, coach of the Australian rugby team Brisbane Broncos, was heavily inspired by a documentary on the mighty Federer. Although Walters was happy with his young squad, he believed there were some areas that they needed to improve on. As Federer did with his temperament, Walters aimed at improving his squad’s behavior when they were in public.

The part of the documentary in which Federer learned how to speak during professional interviews made Walters take the step to teach his players etiquette. Even when he is off-court, Federer has worked his magic to inspire millions.
