Going back in time, Andy Murray was counted in the same list as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. However, with a downward trend in the performance, the former World No. 1 was eventually pulled out from the elite list. Looking at the records, Murray, with 46 singles titles to his name, hasn’t won a single title since 2019.

With just 4 days remaining for the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, the entire tennis world is busy picking up their top contenders. On one hand, tennis fans are rooting for Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. On the other hand, another section is supporting new generation players like Matteo Berrettini. While the three are being called the title favorites, tennis legend John McEnroe has also added the name of Andy Murray to the list.

John McEnroe names Andy Murray amongst the favorites for Wimbledon

Missing out on the clay-court season, Andy Murray kicked off his grass-court campaign at the Surbiton Challenger, suffering a semifinal loss. Not losing hope, he made back the transition from the challenger tour to the ATP tour, playing the ATP 250 Stuttgart. However, an abdominal injury forced the Brit to withdraw from the tournament.

Recovering from the injury, Murray is eyeing a return at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. While questions are being raised over his fitness, McEnroe has a different view. The legendary player believes Murray could be one of the title contenders. Interacting with a media house, McEnroe said, “If Murray’s fit, I absolutely believe he is one of the contenders.”

Going back to the list, Roger Federer is currently out of the tour. However, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal continue to rule the game. Especially Nadal, who shocked the world with his wins at Australian Open and French Open. As mentioned earlier, the two are also the hot favorites for Wimbledon.

Going further in the conversation, McEnroe ended by saying, “If he’s looking at Rafa and Novak, he’s got to be thinking, he’s going to have one last hurrah, I believe. I think that’s entirely conceivable.”
