Thirty-seven-year-old Rafael Nadal has achieved everything there is to achieve on the tennis court. The Spanish legend has left an indelible mark on the sport, winning accolades across decades. In a stellar career that has seen him win 22 majors, including a record 14 Roland Garros titles, Nadal became synonymous with the term mental toughness in the world of sports. However, a unique quality of the Spanish tennis legend was revealed by a few of his fellow tennis stars in a recent fun interview.

It goes without saying that he has inspired millions of young and aspiring athletes to take up the tennis racket. His influence is largely prevalent in the current crop of tennis professionals, as many have time and again expressed their admiration for the Spanish legend. In a recent interactive session with a racket sports brand, a few players shed light on Nadal’s resourcefulness.

The monumental success of Rafael Nadal in his career is often attributed to his never-say-die attitude on the tennis court and astounding ability to dig deep when his back is against the wall. In a recent fun question-and-answer session conducted by renowned racket sports brand Babolat, active tennis stars reiterated their admiration for the King of Clay’s super-resilient nature.

“Which player do you think would be the most resourceful on a deserted island?”, they were asked. Rafael Nadal was the clear favorite in the eyes of most. Canadian youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime responded quirkily, “I would go Rafa.. Doesn’t he own a boat?”.

Chinese WTA star Xinyu Wang had the same answer, “Rafa.. Because he’s just gonna keep trying.” Italian ATP ace Fabio Fognini, who has played against Nadal on a number of occasions in the past, explained why the Spanish legend is the best bet to handle such a situation, “Probably Rafa.. We have to say Rafa because he will find a way for sure.. He’s the best.”

Time and again in his career, Nadal has displayed a never-give-up mentality that helped him completely overturn the course of important matches in his favor. He himself opened up about the importance of mental strength before Roland Garros in 2019.

During an interview before the start of the French Open in 2019, Nadal shed light on his almost mythical mental strength. According to him, the key is to not let negative thoughts take over you when things are not going according to plan.

Keeping the right attitude when you’re out of form or battling through injuries is very significant, as per the 22-time grand slam champ. He also mentioned the importance of backing one’s own self up when the situations aren’t in their favor, to keep believing that it requires just one window of opportunity to overturn the course of the match.

Giving up simply isn’t in the dictionary of the ‘King of Clay’. Perhaps this is the reason why millions of tennis fans still believe that he’ll come back to the tour for one last magical run and reclaim his position at the helm of men’s tennis like he has done so many times in the past.
