Holger Rune was confident about Rafael Nadal’s return at the Brisbane International

Nadal made his comeback this year with the Brisbane International. While the Spaniard had a good start, he was soon out of the tournament. He lost against Jordan Thompson with scores of 7-5, 6⁶-7⁸, and 3-6. Rune, on the other hand, has made it to the finals of the tournament as he defeated Roman Safiullin in straight sets of 6-4 and 7⁷-6⁰ in the semifinals.

As the top seed in Brisbane, Rune faced the unique challenge of sharing the stage with Nadal. He acknowledged the buzz surrounding the tournament. With players like Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov also in the mix, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation.

He stated: “I knew that Rafa was going to come here. It’s been a great tournament. I think we also had Andy here. Grigor is here. Rafa was here.” Rune’s initial thoughts on Nadal’s match against Thompson hinted at the competitive spirit prevailing in the tournament. He further stated: “It’s been a good field. I think a bunch of good players. It’s been an exciting tournament I think.”

When asked about the prospect of facing Nadal in the final. Rune’s response conveyed a blend of disappointment and acceptance. In his words: “I think I’m just focusing on the match that I have to play. Whether it’s that opponent or that opponent, that’s not really up to me. I just have to stay focused on my things.” While it’s true that Nadal is out of the Brisbane race, his comeback still has many opportunities to make its way through.
