Throughout tennis’ illustrious history, the sport has had numerous European or North American players on the top. That said, there are quite a few players from other continents who have made their mark on the Tour. Juan Martin del Potro certainly belongs at the top of this category. He was one player who showed that non-European players can also win big. In fact, he is the sole non-European grand slam champion in the last 19 years, a fact that he is honored by fans all around the world.

Del Potro hinted at retiring from the sport in 2022, due to his prolonged struggle with injury. But the Argentine legend has sent his fans into a frenzy by announcing that he plans to return to court.

Ask any tennis fan about the grand slam winners anytime since 2004, and they would reply with either Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. In the 2009 US Open final, where Del Potro faced Federer, fans had already bet their money on the Swiss Maestro. But the Argentine’s win astonished everyone and gave him bragging rights over several other players of the world.

Delpo is one of the few players outside of the big three to have won a slam since 2004. Adding to the already glorious list, Delpo is the only non-European player to win a single’s grand slam since 2004. A tennis news page (Break the Deuce) on Instagram shared the fact recently, and Delpo loved it. To brag about his win once more, he added the post to his Instagram story as well.

While the former number 5 has a slam under his belt, he wants to return for another US Open.

Delpo back on the hard-court?

The news of the Argentine’s possible retirement saddened every tennis fan. But there may be some happiness in sight, as Delpo has sparked rumors of a comeback many times since he hung up the racket. In an interview with ESPN in March, Delpo stated that he could come back for the US Open later this year. Since Argentina won the FIFA 2023 World Cup, del Potro said that Lionel Messi and his team have pushed him to train once again.

Although he is still plagued with injuries, the 2009 US Open champion wants to have one last dance at his favorite slam and see if he can enjoy a memorable farewell.
