Roger Federer became a sensation in the sport during his teens. He came from a middle-class family who wasn’t worried about their finances. However, the Federers did have limits to whatever they could buy and were worried about wasteful expenses. Once, after one of his much earlier interviews, his mother was horrified at what her son wanted to purchase. But it became a wholesome moment as the air was cleared later.

Although the Swiss Maestro’s mother was worried about the expenses he wanted to make during his teenage years, Federer did not stand as one of the richest athletes in the world. The 20-time Grand Slam champion can now buy whatever he needs without worrying about making a dent in his income.

Roger Federer worried his mother

During his teenage years, Federer had made quite the name for himself on the junior circuit. His exploits had garnered him quite a bit of attention, and the player had earned the attention of several news outlets. One news reporter reached out for an interview, and the young Roger agreed.

The reporter asked him what he would want to buy from a hypothetical first check. The answer would first horrify Lynette Federer, but it turned into a wholesome moment after she gained clarification.

As a teenager, he became good enough to warrant an interview with a local newspaper. His mother was appalled to read that, when asked what he would buy with a hypothetical first paycheck from tennis, her son answered, “a Mercedes”. She was relieved when the reporter let her listen to a recording of the interview. There’d been a mistake: The boy had said, “mehr CDs,” in Swiss German. He simply wanted “more CDs”.”

The young Roger Federer only wanted to buy more CDs to listen to, which became lost in translation. While his mother instilled the values of preserving his finances in the Swiss Maestro, he does not need to worry about buying anything expensive anymore.
