Ahead of the Davis Cup Finals this year, all teams are putting up their best players forward to secure the coveted crown. The event, which is supposed to start from the 22nd of this month, will feature players from Serbia, Spain, Austria, Italy, Canada, etc., In a big blow to team Canada’s chances before the marquee event, Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime decided to skip the tournament.

Felix’s decision comes owing to the slight knee injury he has been facing over the past few months on the ATP tour. The Canadian, who saw success at Grand Slams this year as he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and debuted into the semis at the US Open.

Felix took to Instagram to announce his decision.

I’m sorry to announce that I won’t be able to join my teammates in representing Canada at this years Davis Cup Finals. Since my early days in tennis, it has always been a priority and privilege to step on the court to defend the colours of my country”. 

On the other hand, Shapovalov, who entered the Stockholm Open as the defending champion, lost in the finals this year to the rising American tennis player, Tommy Paul. Post this defeat, Shapovalov announced his decision to sit out of the team event in order to take some rest in the off-season.

The withdrawal of both Felix and Shapovalov comes off as a huge blow to team Canada. The duo were part of the team during the country’s historic run to their first-ever final in 2019 Davis Cup.

Team Canada lost to Team Spain that consisted of players like Rafael Nadal, Pablo Carreno Busta, and Roberto Bautista Agut.

Every year, the number of events played by athletes on the ATP tour are heavily dependent on the rankings scenario as they want to better their positions on the leaderboard. If they encounter an injury during their run, it becomes difficult to prioritize a team event over an individual tournament.
