Matteo Berrettini has been one of the top Italian players on the men’s circuit over the last few years. He had an impressive 2021 season, reaching the finals of the Wimbledon Championships. However, he went down fighting against Novak Djokovic in the summit clash of that tournament. Additionally, he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and the US Open, last year.

The 26-year-old has had a mixed 2022 season. He has suffered from injuries and even had a right-hand surgery done. He won two back-to-back titles on grass courts but had to withdraw from the Wimbledon Championships after testing positive for Covid-19. Recently, he issued an apology to fans after his post on LeBron James caused a stir.

Matteo Berrettini regrets after his post on LeBron James gets misinterpreted

The Italian star posted a story on LeBron James on his official Instagram handle. However, his post was misinterpreted and caused a stir amongst LeBron’s fans. Subsequently, Berrettini issued an apology, saying, “I am very sorry if my previous story post offended anyone. I was informed that it can easily be misinterpreted so I have deleted it. Lebron is my biggest idol. Incredible role model and inspiration.”

In the past, Berrettini has expressed his awe for LeBron James. Earlier this year, he was in attendance to witness the match between Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. During that event, he met with James and the latter’s personality amazed him.

Berrettini falls in the ATP rankings

Following the Wimbledon Championships, the Italian star suffered a big blow to his ATP rankings. He dropped four spots to be at the 15th position on the ATP rankings chart. Berrettini, who had finished runners-up last year, missed this year’s grass-court Grand Slam tournament. However, even if Berrettini would’ve played, he would’ve dropped in the ATP rankings chart, as ranking points weren’t available at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
