Not many players have been able to mount a challenge against Roger Federer at Wimbledon. Ask, the former Russian tennis player, Mikhail Youzhny. The Swiss maestro is one of the greatest players to have played in the tournament. Further, he has won an astonishing eight Wimbledon titles.

During the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, Federer was up against Youzhny in the quarterfinals. The Swiss maestro was at his very best as he breezed past Youzhny in straight sets. However, midway through their match, an interesting incident occurred.

Mikhail Youzhny ran out of ideas against Roger Federer
The 20-time Grand Slam champion dominated the match right from the word go, as he won the first two sets comfortably 6-1, 6-2. Riding on to the momentum, Federer applied tremendous pressure on Youzhny’s serve during the start of the third set. The Russian star lost a marathon rally to hand Federer a breakpoint in the first game of the third set.

Subsequently, he turned to Andre Agassi, who was present in the stands, and asked him, “Andre, what do I have to do? Ha? You know what I have to do. Tell me! Tell me! I don’t know!” Youzhny wore a frustrated look as he ran out of ideas against Federer who was dominating him on the court.

Subsequently, Federer went on to defeat Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and Andy Murray in the finals to win his seventh Wimbledon title.

Federer’s incredible record against Youzhny
The Russian star’s quarterfinal meeting against Federer at 2012 Wimbledon wasn’t the first time that Federer was dominating Youzhny. The two have met several times during their careers, with Federer prevailing in all of them. In the 17 matches played between the two, Youzhny has failed to win even a single match.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon was the last tournament where Federer played. He suffered a knee injury after his quarterfinal defeat against Hubert Hurkacz during last year’s Wimbledon. Which has kept him away from tennis for over a year now. Moreover, he has lost all his ranking points and has moved out of the ATP rankings chart.
