Everyone had a great Laver Cup experience, whether it was Roger Federer, tennis fans, or other players who were a part of the tournament. But there was one tennis player from Team World, Tommy Paul, who had a hard time during the tournament last year. What went wrong with the American tennis player at the Laver Cup? 

Everybody at the tournament last year was quite grateful to be a part of the game, as the Swiss Maestro called time on his illustrious tennis career. But did the American tennis player enjoy watching the 20-time Grand Slam champion play the last tennis match of his career?

Last year, the 25-year-old was picked up as an alternate tennis player for Team World. And even after having a breakout season, the tennis player wanted to play more matches and didn’t quite enjoy sitting out. As a testament to his upturn in form, he is currently a playing the Australian Open and has made his way to the quarter-finals. Subsequently, after winning the fourth round, during the post-match press conference, Paul was asked about his experience being a part of the Team World.

He said, “Yeah, the event was awesome. But for me, I just sat on the bench for a long time. It wasn’t amazing watching. It was amazing being in the presence of Roger during his retirement and everything, but I hate sitting on the bench. It was kind of a hard time for me. I was excited to play my own tournaments after that.”

How did Roger Federer inspire Paul? 

Nevertheless, according to the American star, seeing the Swiss Maestro’s retirement was the best part of the whole tournament. Not only that, but he is also a big Federer fan. Last year, the 25-year-old opened up about how the 20-time Grand Slam champion has influenced his tennis career and his life. 

The American tennis player got a chance to meet the former world number one during Indian Wells in 2017. Paul had a great time with Federer as they both went practicing at his house. He had lunch with him and his family.
