Defeats are a big part of the life of a sportsman. However, some defeats will stay with a player for their entire career, and maybe after that. One example of a similar victory took place during the peak of the career of Andy Roddick. In the 2009 Wimbledon final, Roddick played a great match against Roger Federer. 14 years later, the American still remembers his loss as something that ended up giving him flashbacks.

Andy Roddick has had a difficult time playing against Roger Federer. Playing in four grand slam finals against the Swiss Maestro, Roddick did not win any matches. As frustration kept building up, he even said that Federer’s impact forced him to retire earlier than players in his era.

After winning the 2003 US Open, the tennis world imagined that the American dominance of the sport would continue. Roddick never relented and played at his best level throughout his life. Unfortunately, he could not carry over the legacy of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. In fact, some of his defeats have stayed with him over the years. 

On X, formerly Twitter, a user posted a video where a journalist and a lawyer were discussing the 2020 elections. The Wimbledon final between the two in 2009 was a match to remember. Roddick won the first set, as it went to the 12th game. Following his win, Federer won sets two and three, which went to a tie-break. Roddick returned with a win in the fourth set. The fifth set saw intense action as it ended with a score of 16-14 in favor of the Swiss Maestro. After facing such a harrowing defeat, Roddick was left with despair which has apparently stayed with him throughout all these years.

How the Swiss Maestro forced Roddick to put the racket down

In a podcast where he was talking about his Pickleball adventures, Roddick recalled his rivalry with the 20-time grand slam champion. A decade after retiring, Roddick has talked about the impact Federer had on him. For him, Federer became the biggest point of jealousy in his life. For a player who hates just losing a practice set, defeat in three Wimbledon finals took a massive toll.

He eventually put the racket down in 2012 but returned to play once in 2015 with Mardy Fish. Now, the American player enjoys his life as a Hall of Famer. But he will not soon forget his loss against Federer in the finals.
