“I Kept Going”: Andy Murray Is Proud That He Beat a Higher-Ranked Player

3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray had a tough first-round match against Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia today. The 2-time Wimbledon winner had to dig in and give it his all to beat the 21st seed in five sets. 

After the match, the Scottish player spoke about the importance of fans and thanked them for creating a massive atmosphere inside the stadium. He also feels proud that he beat a higher-ranked player at his age. Meanwhile, fans from all over the world are congratulating Andy Murray for the win.

Andy Murray is proud of himself

After the match at the press conference, Andy spoke about competing with younger players, better ranked players and needing to put an effort into beating them.

He said, “I feel I could have done better for sure, but competing today with a guy around 20-25 ATP makes me proud. Is not easy, I needed a lot of work and effort after all the issues I had I kept going.”

Earlier, Andy had said that he would like to win at least 50 career titles before he retires. And if he can keep his fitness level high, he might feel he has a shot at the Australian Open as well.

The possibility is certainly there for Andy Murray after beating Basilashvili in the first round. He will now face a Qualifier from Japan named Taro Daniel, who beat another qualifier in the first round. With Andy’s experience, he should be the favorite this match, but he needs to improve his fitness level to win the whole thing.

The Tennis world reacts to Murray’s win

Currently ranked at 113, Andy Murray had to bring his A-game to the tennis court to win his match against 21st seed Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Georgian is a tough competitor for anyone, let alone Murray. Basilashvili is also one of the hardest hitters on the tour. But Andy Murray used his experience to win the match in five sets by 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. 

Social media was certainly impressed with Murray’s effort on the court, as many reactions came pouring in. Andy’s mother, brother, and a few former players looked really impressed with Murray’s performance. 

Andy’s brother Jamie Murray showed lots of support for his brother. 

Their Mother retweeted this tweet with lots of love emojis. Former Tennis player, James Blake wrote, “Andy Murray, what a competitor.  Congrats.  Fun to watch.”

Some of the fans also reacted to Murray’s win and showed lots of love towards him. One fan wrote, “My 2 year old setting up all her toys and getting behind Andy Murray… let’s go.” Even, Andy’s mother reacted to this tweet, and said, I love this. How wonderful!!

Murray’s win after all the injury issues he’s been through, especially at the Australian Open, where he has so many memories, is certainly an amazing moment for any tennis fan.
