‘I Prefer to be Me’ – Holger Rune Hits Out at Fan After Quarters Loss at 2022 French Open

Holger Rune announced himself to the tennis world after beating World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the French Open. Remarkably, the 19-year-old reached his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final; however, he fell short soon after.
The youngster made headlines after his repeated outbursts against Casper Ruud, who stayed calm during his win on Wednesday. Rune, meanwhile, will make his entry into the Top 30 of the rankings for the first time in his career. However, his behavior on the court caused a few fans to share their unrequested advice, which certainly did not sit well with him.

Rune hits back at fan after quarter-final exit
Despite the Danish’s sensational run, his antics in the quarter-final came into question. Rune was seen shaking his head and looking at his box repeatedly. Reacting to the same, a fan on Twitter even commented, “Get you act together. Quarrelling on every decision and screaming like a baby. You should learn some behaviour from Ruud.”

The Danish star was having none of it, replying, “No thanks . I prefer to be me.” The youngster is having his breakthrough season since turning professional in 2020. He also claimed his first ATP Tour title at the Bavarian International Tennis Championships in Munich last month.

But there is still a long way to go for Rune, as he becomes the only teenager in the Top 30 alongside superstar Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz, who is ranked 6th in the world, has won ATP 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid, while beating some of the biggest names in the sport.

Ruud dispatches Rune to reach first Grand Slam semi-final
Casper Ruud, the eighth seed, has been impressive in recent months and it showed against the confident teen. After a stunning first set, Ruud took his foot off the gas to let his counterpart back in the game. But the Norwegian returned to his best soon after, winning 6-1 4-6 7-6(2) 6-3.

He will now face Croatian Marin Cilic, after his marathon battle against Andrey Rublev. In the other semi-final, 13-time champion Rafael Nadal will take on third seed Alexander Zverev for a place in the final. All eyes will be on Court Phillipe-Chatrier this week, as history could be well in the making.
