Boris Becker’s camaraderie with Novak Djokovic goes back a long way. The German tennis great served as head coach for Djokovic for a period of 3 years, starting in December 2013. Their partnership earned a lot of dividends for the Serbian. Novak Djokovic won 25 titles, including 6 grand slams during his time with Becker. Hence, it was heartbreaking for the 22-time grand slam champion when Becker was sentenced to 2-and-a-half years in prison last year on accounts of hiding assets worth £2.5 million after declaring bankruptcy. In one of his recent interviews, the disgraced German tennis legend revealed how his former player gave him a moment of joy in prison.

After serving 8 months in two UK prisons, Becker was released and deported to Germany in December last year. In a recent interview with the Guardian, he revealed how he watched the finals of Wimbledon 2022 from his prison cell.

I was very emotional when he won. It was a great statement and he’s a friend so I was happy to see him win”, he said. Djokovic won his 4th successive and 7th overall Wimbledon crown in 2022, with a 3-sets-to-1 victory over Australian Nick Kyrgios. In 2014, Boris Becker got to celebrate Novak Djokovic’s epic Wimbledon final victory over arch-rival Roger Federer alongside him as he looked on from the player’s box. Unfortunately, fate had other plans for him last year.

He has publicly spoken about his prison experiences with the media. The intimidating atmosphere inside the prison premises got the better of him, as he ‘feared for his life’. He summed up his stay at the notorious Wandsworth prison in London. He said, “I thought I would lose my life in Wandsworth. Someone, a murderer I later found out, wanted my coat and he wanted money and he said he would kill me if he didn’t get it.”

Becker set to return as a commentator

The 6-time grand slam winner will look to move on completely from this chapter of his life as he returns to the commentary box at the upcoming French Open. However, things have changed quite a lot since last year. With Roger Federer and Serena Williams‘ retirement and Rafael Nadal‘s final run knocking on the door, he believes a change of guard is imminent. Djokovic seems to be the only remaining representative of the old guard who hopes to win his 23rd major in the presence of his former coach.
