‘I’m Worried’- Jannik Sinner Says Despite the Way Ukrainians and Russians Respect Each Other on the ATP Tour

Italian sensation Jannik Sinner confesses that he is concerned about the ongoing Ukraine-Russia crisis like everyone else. The 20-year-old has been having a decent run in 2022, reaching the quarterfinals in 4 out of the 5 tournaments he has played so far. He last played at the ATP Masters 1000 Monte Carlo, being outplayed by the second-seeded Zverev in the quarterfinals.

Since the start of the conflict between the two countries, a number of players have come forward, being vocal about their stand. In the long list of players, the latest entry is the Italian prodigy Jannik Sinner.

Recently, post his second-round win in Monte Carlo, Sinner indulged in a conversation with Italian sports daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport. During the conversation, World No. 12 opened up about his stand on the Ukraine-Russia crisis. Expressing his concern, Sinner said, “I’m worried, like everyone else.”

It is often said that life is a roller-coaster ride having its own ups and downs. Same feels Sinner. Elaborating further on his stand on the crisis, Sinner said, “Sometimes things happen that make us understand that there is also pain and evil.”

Even though the two countries may be facing their worst period, the spirit of sports is one domain that unites everyone irrespective of their nationality. The biggest example is the ATP tour. Even though the two countries are in conflict, the tour has made sure to treat all the players equally irrespective of their country.

The San Candido born feels no different. Going ahead, Sinner confessed his love for the sport. Urging it to consider it as a starting point towards peace. He said, “I see that Russians and Ukrainians respect each other and are friends on the Tour. Perhaps we should start from here. I love tennis, I invested all of myself to try to make it my job. I like to play.”

Sinner at the Monte Carlo Masters

Coming in as a quarterfinalist from the Miami Open, Sinner entered the Monte Carlo draw as the 9th seed. He started with a three-setter win over Borna Coric, followed by a second-round win over Emil Ruusuvuori. In the third round, he beat Andrey Rublev before finally falling to Alexander Zverev in the fourth.

He is next expected to play at the ATP 500 Barcelona Open, starting from the 18th of April.
