Indian Wells 2024: American Olympic Medalist Bids Farewell to Tennis With a Gut-Wrecnhing Defeat

With four ATP Tour singles titles and a bronze Olympic medal, Steve Johnson established himself as a household figure in the tennis community. However, the American tennis player has decided to place his racquet down after his heartbreaking defeat at his home tournament, the Indian Wells Open.

Another edition of the ATP Masters 1000 event is back with some exciting qualifying round matches at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Johnson, who was playing his farewell tournament, failed to secure a place in the main draw as he has now also decided to bid adieu to the competitive game.

Despite winning the first set of his first qualifying round match, the 34-year-old player ended up on the losing side after his compatriot Emilio Nava pulled off a brilliant comeback in a three-set game, 7-6, 6-7, 4-6. Following his gut-wrenching defeat in his farewell tournament, Steve Johnson couldn’t hold back his tears on the court as he also received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The official Twitter page of the BNP Paribas Open also hailed the American player in their latest post while highlighting all his remarkable achievements. It tweeted, “Four ATP Tour singles titles, Career-high ATP Ranking of No. 21, Men’s doubles bronze medalist at 2016 Olympics. Congratulations on a fabulous career from all of us at #TennisParadise, @SJohnson_89 👏”

Aside from his recent match at the Indian Wells Open, the 34-year-old marked his campaign at some other tournaments in his last season on the men’s tour. So let’s take a look at the former world No. 21 player’s notable performances during this season.

The American player started the season with his participation in the Dallas Open, where he brushed aside the likes of Timo Stodder and Terence Atmane to secure a spot in the main draw. However, in his round-of-32 game, Johnson tasted a defeat at the hands of the fifth-seeded Christopher Eubanks in straight sets, 1-6, 4-6.

Later, the former doubles Olympic bronze medalist made a return to the court at the Los Cabos Open, where he also had to play some qualifying round matches. In his first game at the outdoor hard court event in Mexico, Johnson failed to overcome his compatriot, Aleksandar Kovacevic, who won with a score of 7-5, 6-3.
