Wawrinka stated, “I would like to congratulate Roger, he’s laughing, he’s an a****** but it’s okay. I lost some tough ones against you, but when you played the final in Australia I was still your biggest fan so congrats for your comeback and congrats for today.”

While the 38-year-old lost the match against the 20-time Grand Slam champion, he jokingly pointed fingers at how the former world number one was laughing after achieving the victory against him. Not only that, Wawrinka also explained his happiness for Federer’s comeback and, then, referred to himself as a Federer fan.
However, even after being friends and rivals for such a long time, the three-time Grand Slam champion recently opened up about his current equation with the former world number one after his retirement.

Wawrinka’s current equation with Federer
After facing an early exit from the Rio Open, in an interview with Marca, Wawrinka was asked about whether he was still in contact with his Swiss compatriot. Subsequently, he was also asked about whether he has regular conversations with him as a friend or not. Wawrinka stated, “Yes, we talk sometimes, but not about tennis.”
Moreover, while Wawrinka clearly skipped the friendship question, he highlighted how, from time to time, they both connect and talk about a lot of other things, but not tennis. The two have always been good friends, and the 38-year-old has been open about looking up to Federer as his idol on the tennis court.
