The atmosphere at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden was literally ‘buzzing’ when Carlos Alcaraz squared off against Alexander Zverev in a high-profile quarterfinal. While he was forced to take shelter inside the stadium, the 2-time singles Grand Slam champion also got stung on the side of his forehead. As the Spaniard was stuck in a difficult situation, do you know who came to his rescue at the BNP Paribas Open?

Both the ATP superstars were forced to leave the court, and a few spectators were also removed from the stands due to the hazardous conditions. However, it was a local Palm Desert beekeeper who came to the rescue as the Indian Wells Masters quarterfinals resumed after a lengthy delay.

The tournament’s beekeeper, Lance Davis, was called after a swarm of bees caused a delay of nearly two hours. Davis, who has worked with bees since 1971, was barehanded when he managed to remove a slew of yellow-jacketed stingers that took up residence at ‘Tennis Paradise.’

The official Twitter page of the ATP Tour also hailed the beekeeper as a ‘legend and icon’ in their latest social media post. It stated, “It’s time to BEE the main character… 😎 Welcome, legend, icon, Lance Davis 🫡🐝 @BNPPARIBASOPEN #IndianWells.” In a conversation with the ATP Tour, Davis revealed how he was about to drive over to Palms To Pines Automotives when he got an emergency call.

He said, “I had to go drive over to Palms To Pines Automotives and get my truck. They were just starting to work and I went, ‘No, put it back together. I’ve got to go. I’ve got an emergency call!’” As he rushed over and became the star of the show, the tournament’s beekeeper opened up about how he was able to quickly handle the dangerous situation.

The beekeeper is being lauded by many in the tennis community for his courage in the face of adversity as he fearlessly gathered a slew of yellow-jacketed stingers barehanded. In the same interview with the ATP Tour, Davis also revealed that he had his equipment, including a spider cam, set up to catch the bees at the stadium.

He said, “I brought all my equipment up and then they were on the spider cam, so they just swung the spider cam over. I had my equipment set up and I vacuumed up the bees into a live-catch cage. Then I can take them out… and release them into one of my hives that I have. They’re set up just for this type of thing.”
