Daniil Medvedev missed out on the Australian Open title and subsequent record of becoming the first player to win a consecutive Grand Slam title after opening his account by winning the US Open crown last year. However, the final at ‘happy slam’ taught him some important lessons that will guide him for the rest of the season.

Medvedev is now playing in the Mexican Open as the top seed and won his 1st match comfortably against unseeded French veteran Benoit Paire. The Russian will next face the winner of the match between Pablo Andujar and Alejandro Hernandez.

The Russian’s win in the match fueled the talk of him grabbing the No.1 spot in the ATP rankings. When asked about the same, Daniil said, “When you are young you think it’s impossible so that’s why you DREAM about it. It’s not a dream anymore, it’s a goal. I have to try to play well next three tournaments.”

There is clearly a close contest for the top spot between Novak Djokovic and the Russian. Novak currently leads the table with 8,875 points and Medvedev is placed second with 8435 points. Medvedev can overcome the 440-point difference by performing exceptionally well in the coming few tournaments.

While the chess master is winning back-to-back matches, Djokovic is also making progress in Dubai. Novak and Daniil didn’t win these respective tournaments last year. As a result, winning both the events will fetch points to them.

Medvedev’s calculation of 3 tours is based on the quality of competition he is currently facing in Acapulco. Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas are some of the quality challenges at the Mexican Open. Novak Djokovic is having Denis Shapovalov and Roberto Bautista Agut to face in Dubai.
