The quarter-final match between Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios at the Indian Wells had plenty of drama. Particularly, Kyrgios had many interactions with the crowd, and some of those were not very pleasant. During the tie-break in the first set, Nick used bad language to silence a member of the crowd. As a result, he received a point penalty and lost the first set. Meanwhile, former American tennis player Andy Roddick pointed out the reason people should not shout during a tennis match.

Andy Roddick explains why people should not yell during a tennis match

Former World no.1 American tennis player Andy Roddick had many battles in the past with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and others. So, it’s safe to say he has pretty good knowledge about the sport. Recently, a Twitter user expressed his views about people yelling during a tennis match.

The Twitter user said, “To avoid situations like what just happened on a big point with Kyrgios and Nadal they should just switch tennis to the same as other sports where you can yell the entire match, during points, serves, etc.”

In response, Roddick explained why people should not shout, especially during a tennis match. According to him, you can gain knowledge from the sound of your opponent’s racket. “Nope. You don’t hear someone pitch, throw, or shoot. You hear a person hit a ball and instantly gain knowledge from that sound…. how hard it was hit, spins, etc. it’s not the same,” the American player explained

Undoubtedly, the quarter-final match was entertaining to watch. However, people will most probably remember this match for all the wrong reasons. The crowd behavior in between points was not pleasing for both the players, particularly Kyrgios. At one point, the chair umpire, Carlos Bernardes, had to shut a member of a crowd with pure frustration.

He said, “Thank you, ladies and gentlemen… Gentleman! Gentleman! Ten thousand people want to watch tennis here. You’re the only one who is screaming like crazy! Please!”

Meanwhile, all the crowd noise could not break Nadal’s immense concentration, as he outlasted the Australian in three sets; The final score was 7-6,5-7,6-4. Now, he will face the 19-year-old Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, in the semi-final of the Indian Wells.
