“Hello everyone, I wanted to inform you that unfortunately I have to end the 2021 season. Honestly, I’ve been suffering a lot more than I should with my foot for a year and I need to take some time,” tweeted Nadal. (Translated via Google Translate)

Rafa recently decided to play a golf tournament just one week before the US Open 2021. It was a hint that the Spaniard is not well and might withdraw from the Grand Slam anytime soon. Interestingly, he is the latest to end his season after Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem.

“I promise you that I will work hard to try to continue to enjoy this sport for some more time. Big hug to all!” wrote Rafa on Instagram after his recent announcement.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion injured his left foot during the French Open 2021. Even though he returned at the Citi Open 2021, he still had issues with his foot and later withdrew from the National Bank Open and the Cincinnati Masters 2021 as he was not able to recover in time.

Rafael Nadal at the 2021 tennis season

It is for the first time since 2016 that Nadal has failed to win a Grand Slam title in a tennis season. Interestingly, he didn’t even take part in the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open 2021.

Rafa won two titles this season and he conquered both of them on clay including a Masters 1000 title. He won the Barcelona Open 2021 for the 12th time and then went on to win achieve his ‘La Decima’ at the Italian Open 2021.

However, the Spaniard failed to impress fans on the hardcourt and didn’t even play a single match on grass this season.
