Have you ever heard a tennis veteran talk about his biggest dream and biggest nightmare, including these two legends from the court? Recently, John McEnroe made a tremendous revelation regarding playing with one and playing against another, choosing his partner and competitor from the pair itself.

John McEnroe reveals his dream and nightmare tennis matches

Recently, the 64-year-old American tennis legend, in a conversation with Smartless podcast, came across a question about what his dream and his nightmare on the court look like. McEnroe was asked during the podcast about who he would choose as his ideal playing partner, regardless of their age. In response, he responded that if the world’s top tennis players were still competing, he would want to play Federer in his ideal match.

He said, “The dream would be to play Roger Federer at Wimbledon. The nightmare would be to play Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros on clay, even though I grew up on clay and that was my best surface so I turned pro Wow. But he’s you know what he did was insane.” McEnroe later went on to reveal his choice for the greatest men’s tennis player.

Not only did he reveal his dream match, but he also explained that playing against the 22-time Grand Slam champion on the clay court would be a nightmare for him. Given that the Spaniard has won 14 French Open championships, it is evident that he is a dominant player in the tournaments that are played on clay courts.

However, while his biggest competitor and his dream partner are from the Big 3. When it came to choosing the GOAT, he made a totally different decision. Rather than going for Federer or Nadal, he chose the Serbian tennis player, Novak Djokovic, to be the best competitor on the court.

When John McEnroe rooted for Novak Djokovic 

After putting Federer and Nadal firmly out of the GOAT picture, the seven-time Grand Slam champion praised the 36-year-old Serbian star as the greatest tennis player of all time. He said, “It’s not easy to get the better of Novak; if you ever do, the Djoker always finds a way to punch back. That’s why he is the most resilient player. Novak isn’t just the best, he’s the best of all time.”

While a huge debacle is going on regarding how nobody can replace what the two have given to the tennis world, McEnroe carries a different view about who should be the GOAT. McEnroe has perfect clarity on what he dreams, what is his nightmare, and who is the greatest.
