Novak Djokovic is one of the few players who have come close to achieving the Grand Slam, winning all four slams in the calendar consecutively in their life. However, one or another player has always stopped him from getting Rod Laver‘s record. The 2021 season was especially difficult for Djokovic since he won all three slams and even went far in the Olympics, ending his stint in the tournament as number 4.

Why Novak Djokovic couldn’t win the Grand Slam in 2021

In 2021, Novak Djokovic was unstoppable. The Serbinator managed to even beat Rafael Nadal at his favorite Roland Garros and would go on to win the first three slams of the season. His efforts would not end there, as he went on to play in the Olympics for his country. He ended the stint in fourth place and further stepped into the US Open but couldn’t manage to win the tournament.

Rennae Stubbs, Serena Williams’ former coach, recently talked about why he lost the final against Daniil Medvedev. “He knows that he almost came so close to doing it a couple of years ago. When Medvedev beat him in the final of the US Open, I think he was ragged after the Olympics in Tokyo. I think mentally he was probably just absolutely fried by the time he got to that final. We saw that in his demeanor.”

Stubbs also said that he was ‘defeated in every sense of the word’ and will have a different plan coming into the 2024 season. “He was just defeated in every sense of the word. And I think he’s gonna go into this year, very set for all the grand slams. And the Olympics. I think he’ll set his schedule that he probably learned a lot about not overplaying like he’s done mainly on his own volition really.”
