Yesterday, the 6th of July, Rafael Nadal probably played his best tennis since the 2022 Australian Open finals against Daniil Medvedev. Being two sets down, the Spaniard made a phenomenal comeback to outplay Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

The win became even more special as Nadal suffered an abdominal injury during the match. However, despite the injury, the urge for another Grand Slam title pushed the 36-year-old towards a monumental victory. Going gala over Nadal’s performance, legendary player John McEnroe drew a comparison between the Spaniard and Superman.

How Rafael Nadal became the Superman of Tennis

Being in devastating form since the start of the season, Rafael Nadal cruised over his opponents in the initial rounds of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Entering the quarterfinals, he faced his first test in the form of Taylor Fritz. Things got worse when he suffered an abdominal injury during the match. Struggling to play, he even opted for a medical time-out during the match. However, not willing to give up, the 22-time Grand Slam champion not only came back but also booked a spot in the final 4.

Impressed by Nadal’s performance, McEnroe started by saying“He’s like superman or something.” “I thought kryptonite had struck because it didn’t look like he was going to finish a couple of times, but he found a way,” he further added.

Even though Nadal played some phenomenal tennis, what also deserved praise was Fritz’s performance. Eyeing to replicate the Indian Wells finals, Fritz made sure to go neck to neck with Nadal. However, despite giving his all, he failed to withstand the game of the Spanish bull.

Going ahead in the conversation, McEnroe further said, “This was a match that for long periods saw Taylor Fritz play some incredible tennis. He is an amazing ball striker. He’s got a huge serve, but Nadal was a genius out there.”

How Nadal outplayed Fritz in the blockbuster match

Today, Nadal stands tall as one of the most experienced players on the tour. Being associated with the game for the past two decades; the Spaniard uses his experience in the best possible way to overcome situations like these. Yesterday, struggling with the injury, World No. 4 opted to make changes to his game. Along with changing his tactics, he also made sure to force Fritz to fall in for it.

Elaborating on the change in tactics, McEnroe said, “He knows Fritz is not as comfortable at the net and he exposed him out there.

Nadal is known for his massive dominance in the game. However, apart from that, he is also known for his sportsman spirit. An example of it was visible yesterday. Following his win over Fritz, the Spaniard seemingly apologized to Fritz for beating him when not at his 100%. An act, in McEnroe’s words, is ‘Tough’.

“Nadal tried every trick in the book and in the end, he sort of apologized for beating him when he was not 100 percent. That’s tough,” the American legend ended.
