Nick Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon Championships finalist, recently took to Instagram to share the devastating news of the demise of his beloved grandmother. His words mirrored the intensity of his feeling of her loss for him. His fans know him to be someone close to his relatives and friends. Also, past events of his life, like the death of his maternal grandmother in 2014, also revealed how sensitive he is about the death of a loved one.

Nick Kyrgios: from heartbreak to heartbreak

In the pictures the Australian tennis star shared on Instagram, his late grandmother can be seen triumphantly holding the newspaper with the picture of the 28-year-old tennis star. She poses like a champion with a WWE belt with her fist in the air in another photo. In another one she is standing near Kyrgios, her eyes lit with his presence.

Seems like I can’t catch a break right now,” he wrote. ”RIP Yiayia, the best we could ask for. Go enjoy your time with Papou now.” Sympathies and prayers poured in the comments. His Greek girlfriend Costeen Hatzi posted: ‘Yiayia will always be looking over you.’ Yiayia is the Greek word for grandmother.

But what role did she play in the making of the tennis star? The 2022 Washington Open champion revealed that his grandmother was like a mother and played a major role in his education, upbringing, and training for tennis.

But this isn’t the first time the Australian tennis superstar is experiencing the loss of a close family member. In 2014, the former World No. 13 suffered the loss of his 74-year-old maternal grandmother. Devastated, he opened his heart to the audience a year later at the Australian Open, about the same.

He described how the passing away of his grandmother pierces his daily life. “My grandma passed away last year, that is something I still think about every day, and that’s probably made me a little bit more mature,’ he explained.

Why he opted out of the French Open?

Fans missed him in the Australian Open in January after he underwent knee surgery, which has kept him out the entire hard and clay-court swings. Although he was aiming to be back for Roland Garros, his manager later disclosed that the Canberra-born star won’t be able to participate in the French Open.

As the tennis star mourns the death of his grandmother, is it the actual reason for him staying out of the tournament? His manager explained his absence earlier. Daniel Horsfall revealed, “We are trying everything we can to have Nick ready on court as soon as possible.” But given how deeply the death of his maternal grandmother affected him in 2014, experiencing a similar situation now could have played a role in him skipping the clay-court major.
