The 25th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards is all set to take place at the iconic Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain. Several superstars of the sporting world are all lined up to grace the red carpet event. This annual award ceremony honors outstanding sportsmen and women from around the world. Lionel Messi won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in 2023. Who will win this prestigious award this time around? Statistics favor the world number tennis star, Novak Djokovic. Here’s why the Serb is most likely to win this award in 2024.

Who are the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in 2024? Novak Djokovic (Serbian tennis player), Mondo Duplantis (Swedish athlete), Noah Lyles (American athlete), Erling Halaand (Norwegian footballer), Lionel Messi (Argentinian footballer) and Max Verstappen (Dutch, F1 racer) are the nominees for this year. If we look at their achievements in the 2023 season, Djokovic seems to have the edge over others. The Serbian had a remarkable 2023 season, he won 7 titles including 3 Grand Slam triumphs.

Moreover, Novak Djokovic won the ATP Finals and also finished the year as world number one for the 8th time in his career. Tennis has always been one of the dominating sports in this award ceremony. Djokovic has won this award four times in his career (2012,2015,2016 and 2019. In 2012 and 2016 combined, he won 3 Grand Slam titles. If we look at his other competitors. Lionel Messi won his record 8th Ballon d’Or award last year. He also led Inter Miami CF to the title triumph at the Leagues Cup (it was his 44th trophy in his career). Messi has won this award previously in 2020 and 2023. While F1 racer, Max Verstappen won this award in 2022.’Last year, the Dutch created a record with 10 consecutive Grand Prix wins and 19 victories in one season. In fact, he became only the fifth F1 driver to record a hat-trick of championship wins.

Swedish athlete Mondo Duplantis raised his own pole vault world record on two further occasions, either side of a second world title. Noah Lyles took gold in the 100,200 and 4×100 m relay last year. Norwegian soccer star, Erling Halaand looked absolutely unstoppable last year. He scored 52 goals for Manchester City and won the treble for the club (Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup). Looking at the magnitude of achievements in 2023, Djokovic looks slightly ahead compared to the rest. But does he think about his nomination?

The 36-year-old tennis star said, “I am thrilled to be nominated once again for Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.I have won this Award four times, and each one has been very special and unforgettable in its own way.” He added it’s an honor for him. Djokovic is overwhelmed to see the quality of the athletes that stands beside him in the nomination list.

Novak Djokovic will be now aiming to equal Roger Federer’s (5) record of being the athlete with the most number of Laureus Awards. “This is what makes the Laureus Awards so special for us, and why we want to win as much as we do when we are competing,” Djokovic added.
