Prior to his campaign at the Australian Open, the Serbian tennis player discussed how Mental strength is something that everyone can train with ‘different techniques.’  While some people might naturally have more than others, Novak Djokovic asserted that players can work on it every day and become stronger athletes mentally. In an interview, Djokovic’s mental strength was being labeled as his ‘great gift’ before the Serb intervened and said, “I would have to correct you. It’s not a gift, it’s something that comes with work.”

He also brought to light some techniques, including ‘conscious breathing’, which has helped him face his inner battles and storms. Djokovic said, “There are different techniques. Conscious breathing is a big part, especially in the moments when you’re under tension. I might appear locked in but trust me there’s a storm inside and the biggest, always, battle is within.”

Speaking about “negativity” and whether or not it impacts the entire match, the current world number one player also issued his honest take. He stated, “I don’t like this kind of a mindset that I see a lot of in sports like just think positive thoughts, be optimistic, there’s no room for failure, there’s no room for, you know, for doubts and stuff like this. It’s impossible. You are a human being.

Djokovic’s insightful reflection on mental strength has now inspired the 4-time singles Grand Slam champion Kim Clijsters, who shared a video clip of the Serb’s interview on her Instagram stories. The Belgian WTA veteran also added the caption,“Love this from Novak!”
