In a stunning upset at the Madrid Open, Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro sent shockwaves through the tennis world by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas. But for the 29-year-old tennis player, winning matches is only one aspect of his story. Resilience has been a defining characteristic of Monteiro’s career, both on and off the court, as he meets obstacles head-on with unyielding drive.

He is incredibly driven by a very personal reason: his mother, whose sacrifices and steadfast support have molded his path. Born into a loving and resolute family, Monteiro finds strength in his mother’s leadership, which inspires him to pursue his goals. But do you know the Greek tennis player Conqueror is an adopted child who grew up in a single mother’s shadow?

In an interview with ATP, the Brazilian tennis player opened up about why family, especially his mother, is more important than his bloodline. He stated, “One of the stories my mom told me when I was little was that I was a gift from God, who sent me with a stork, which delivered me to my mom’s door. It’s funny thinking of that today. Then my mom told me that I came from another family, but that she loved me the same way she did her blood children. The truth is, I was adopted.”

However, even having such a great mother, came with a lot of difficult moments for him, in such a way that his mother suffered from breast cancer. “But she’s a fighter. In her mind, adopting a kid had a chance to be a shining star of light to bring happiness back into her life,” he added.

Monteiro also revealed that he didn’t know that he was adopted when he was 9 or 10 years old. After the 29-year-old tennis player’s mother adopted him, she also adopted two girls, Leticia and Jessica, and gave them the best life, as a family.

But she also inspired him to be who he is today, “There were plenty of tough situations for my mom, Fatima, from financial difficulty to breast cancer and raising all of us by herself. Trust me, that was not an easy job. But she has always inspired me and continues to do so today.” Moreover, the biggest question is whether Monteiro’s birth mother or his actual family is related to his bloodline.

Did the Tsitsipas conqueror know about his biological mother?

In the same interview, he answered the most frequently asked question that he gets when he talks about his adopted status: whether he knows about his biological mother or not. He stated, “The truth is that I have not. I don’t know if it’s wrong on my part, but I always felt my family is the one I have now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really grateful for what my biological mom did.”

The Brazilian tennis player is appreciative that his biological mother gave up a son, even if he was never interested in getting to know his real family. In addition, he disclosed that he only vaguely knows that his birth mother attended a Brazilian Catholic church when she was pregnant but was unable to raise a child and eventually gave him away, for his better future.
