This year’s Madrid Open has been an event of complete turnarounds. The event recently saw the likes of Jannik Sinner withdraw due to an injury in his hip while Carlos Alcaraz came into the event with an injury in his forearm that he sustained during the Monte Carlo Masters. Now, one more name has been added to the list. Daniil Medvedev, who was looking in red hot form at the event had to unexpectedly withdraw.

Playing his quarter-final match against Jiri Lehecka, he was trailing a set down. The first set ended with a scoreline of 6-4 in favor of Lehecka. However, the set was not an easy one for him. He was having difficulty moving around the court. Eventually, as the second set was about to start, his problem started to worsen and he had to retire right before the start of the second set.

The reason for Daniil Medvedev‘s injury is said to be an adductor problem that he has been dealing with. He even took an off-court medical timeout. However, this did not help him with his movements thereby forcing him to retire after the first set.

Thus, Daniil Medvedev joined the high-profile list of athletes to have made their way out of the event due to injuries. With his withdrawal, a lot of things have changed now. Had he won this match, he could have pushed himself to the third spot while swapping places with Carlos Alcaraz. However, his withdrawal has created doubts over his participation at the Italian Open.

Daniil Medvedev’s Rome Masters participation in doubt after recent injury

Interestingly, Daniil Medvedev could have entered the tournament in Rome as the defending champion. Having won the event last year, a lot was at stake this year. However, now that he pulled out of the tournament citing injury, nothing can be confirmed at the tournament. Not only this, apart from him, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s participation has also come under jeopardy after they have also been suffering from injuries of their own.

This could give Novak Djokovic, the current world number 1 a good chance to extend his lead at the top should he manage to win the event with none of the above three taking part in the event. However, nothing at the moment can be confirmed and as things stand, the fans will have to wait for an official confirmation from the player’s side.
