Novak Djokovic is in some sort of record-breaking spree at the moment. The Serb has once again become the talk of the town after bagging an unprecedented 23rd grand slam title. He claims the number 1 ranking again and overtakes long-term rival Rafael Nadal (22) in the slam race. While the slam count is considered to be the most important metric, certain other records have been smashed by Novak Djokovic with a monumental win over Casper Ruud in the Roland Garros final.

For instance, Djokovic also becomes the first male player to win all four majors at least thrice. His win percentage on clay shoots over 80%, making him the only man to hold this record across all surfaces. However, there is one metric where he surpassed Nadal and Roger Federer but lagged behind Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver.

Djokovic is still behind in slam conversion rate

OptaAce posted an interesting statistic yesterday after the Serb’s landmark win. It put him above his contemporaries, but he is still behind the all-timers. In fact, he only overtook Rafael Nadal in this metric for the first time after yesterday’s win.

The renowned statistic account showed that Djokovic is still behind Borg and Laver in terms of slam winning ratio. It says, “32.9% – Only Bjorn Borg (40.7%, 11/27) and Rod Laver (33.3%, 5/15) have won a greater percentage of Men’s Singles Grand Slam tournaments entered than Novak Djokovic in the Open Era (32.9%, 23/70). Djokovic leads Nadal by the barest of margins here, but with no certainty on the Spaniard’s comeback, he is likely to stay above him for the upcoming months at least. The Serb can also overtake Laver if he defends his Wimbledon title as a 24/71 ratio will result in a 33.8% success rate which is slightly more than Laver’s. However, overtaking Borg does not seem plausible as the Serb would need to win ten consecutive slams for that.

Is Novak Djokovic the greatest player of all time?

Well, subjectively, we can make a strong case for each of the big 3 members as well as the yesteryear legends, such as Rod Laver, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg. However, objectively, Djokovic’s case is the strongest among the contenders.

One thing about stats is that they do not lie and all the major stats are in favor of the Serb. From slam titles to master titles, to weeks at number 1, he has them all.
