American tennis legend Andre Agassi is among the all-time greats of the sport. ‘The Punisher’ has eight Grand Slam titles to his name. The former world number 1 retired from professional tennis back in 2006. However, the American kept playing exhibition matches for a few more years.

In 2014, Agassi was a part of the International Tennis Premier League team, Singapore Slammers. However, something strange happened in the final which embarrassed the former world number 1.

Agassi spoke about his disappointment after missing the finals of the IPTL

After poor performances in his previous two matches at the tournament, the American did not find a place in the finals of the IPTL. The American sat on the sidelines while his teammates took to the court against UAE Royals. Later, the eight-time Grand Slam champion expressed his disappointment over missing the finals.

“Coming back here, I’m a bit embarrassed with the way I was not responding to the environment from a playing perspective. So I would have to make some adjustments and change how much I play so I can flat-out compete and make somebody else look sh**ty,” Agassi said.

Earlier, the American lost 6-3 to Mark Philippoussis and later 6-2 to Fabrice Santoro. This turned out to be the last IPTL match for Agassi.

The iconic rivalry between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras

Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi were two of the top players in the 90s. The two are former world number ones in the ATP rankings. Sampras was on the top for 286 weeks, while Agassi spent 101 weeks on the pinnacle of men’s tennis. Over the years, Sampras and Agassi faced each other on 34 occasions. Sampras ended the rivalry with a 20-14 lead.

Notably, the Americans faced each other in five Grand Slam finals. Sampras leads here as well with a 5-1 record. Their first Grand Slam final meeting was in the 1990 US Open. Agassi went in as the favorite. However, Sampras defeated him in straight sets. Sampras dominated till the last, as he also won the last time they met in a Grand Slam final. Playing in the 2002 US Open final, Sampras defeated Agassi in four sets.
