The Australian Open 2021 is just inches away and players are practicing really hard for it. World No.3 Dominic Thiem is also one of the strongest contenders to win the title and is preparing for the upcoming Grand Slam. However, recently, he spoke about his loss at the Australian Open 2020.

Dominic Thiem ended as the runner-up at the Australian Open 2020. Even though he was leading 2-1 against Novak Djokovic at one stage, he failed to win the remaining two sets and thus, lost the match as well. In a recent interview, Thiem revealed how he was continuously thinking about the loss at the Australian Open last year even at his home.

“I was at home, not going out anywhere, and had a lot of time to think and to reflect, not only on the Australian Open final but on my whole career,” said Thiem in the interview.

It was Thiem’s third Grand Slam final that he lost at the Australian Open last year. Although he defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarters of the Slam, he could not get past the World No.1 player in the finals.

However, Thiem played beautifully at the US Open 2020 and won his first Grand Slam title there. The Austrian player defeated Alexander Zverev after making an incredible comeback in the finals.

“Was not easy”: Dominic Thiem opens up about his thoughts after the loss at the Australian Open 2020

In the game, Thiem also opened up about the thoughts that he had after the Grand Slam’s finals. He mentioned that he was feeling whether he would ever get a chance like this again or not. He even highlighted that the situation was very tough for him at that time.

“Many doubts were coming up. If I ever get that chance again, if I ever will get that close again in the Australian Open final. That was not easy,” added the World No.3 player.

It was definitely not easy for Thiem, especially after he lost three Grand Slam finals. Before this, he managed to reach the French Open finals in 2018 and 2019 but lost to Rafa on both occasions.

With his current form, Thiem will surely be starting as one of the favorites at the Australian Open 2021. Fans have huge expectations from him and he’ll certainly be eyeing his maiden Australian Open title this time. Will Thiem be able to outplay Nadal and Djokovic and win his second Grand Slam title in Melbourne this year?
