‘An Umpire Who Clearly Isn’t Good Enough’ – Nick Kyrgios Calls Chair Umpire Carlos Bernardes a Joke on Twitter

It didn’t go how it was supposed to! After showing glimpses of brilliance in the previous rounds, Nick Kyrgios’ Miami Open campaign ended in disappointment. Earlier today, the Australian went down fighting against the ninth seed, Jannik Sinner, of Italy. It was an exhilarating match filled with drama.
Kyrgios entered the match high in confidence. Earlier, he had defeated the likes of Andrey Rublev and Fabio Fognini en route to the last-16 clash. However, he couldn’t weave his magic against Sinner, who defeated the Australian in straight sets.

The Australian Open men’s doubles champion wasn’t happy with some decisions made by the chair umpire, Carlos Bernardes. Moreover, he argued with the umpire frequently. After the match, Kyrgios called out the chair umpire for his decisions.

Clearly disappointed after his pre-quarterfinal loss against Sinner, Kyrgios left no stones unturned to express his emotions after the match. Taking to Twitter, he said, “Don’t get it twisted. I got mad respect for Jannik Sinner. He is one of my favourite players and he was TOO GOOD. I am aiming all of this at an umpire who clearly ISNT GOOD ENOUGH to be doing these matches. Nothing but a slap on the wrist for him right? What a joke.”

In a closely fought first set, both the players started cautiously, trying to hold their serves. The story continued and the opening set went into a tiebreaker. However, the Italian kept his composure to win points at crucial junctures to take the opening set 7-6 (3).
Further, riding onto the momentum gained by winning the first set, Sinner broke Kyrgios’ serve in the opening game of the second set. Additionally, he was strong in his service games and didn’t let his opponent come back into the match. Sinner provided a final blow to Kyrgios’ hopes when he broke his serve in the ninth game when Kyrgios was trying to stay in the match. Sinner won the second set 6-3 to enter the quarterfinals.

Sinner will take on Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals. The Argentine is having a great run in the tournament, defeating the likes of Gael Monfils and Frances Tiafoe en route to the last eight. It’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top in the battle between Sinner and Francisco Cerundolo.
