Joe Sabia along with his co-director Asif Kapadia appeared on the latest episode of ‘Sports Media with Richard Deitsch’ podcast as the duo touched upon the making of the film. Sabia revealed the support that the makers received from the Swiss Maestro’s wife, Mirka Federer.
When asked if Mirka was ready to appear on the screen, Joe Sabia was seen praising the former tennis player, “Mirka was very supportive.” He recalled the day when the crew discussed the idea with her and the events that followed. “That was day 1 of, of the 12 days. Roger recording his announcement…Just moments before his children came from sports practice. Mirka was there obviously. But before we wrapped for the day, you know I think there was consensus among this very small private circle of people that were there in that room. To say, like hey… let’s let’s get Mirka on the camera, right.”

He further highlighted that Mrs. Federer agreed to the request immediately and performed it very well. “So Mirka said, let’s do, without hesitation. Sat down and for about 5 minutes, just gave her thought. And it didn’t take too long for her to get emotional.” He explained that it is not easy for many people to get emotional that easily, especially when they are in the comfort of their homes. But with Mirka, things were different.

For the unversed, the documentary was initially planned to be released only for people close to the Federer family. While this could have motivated Mirka to appear in the film, she stood by the decision even after the decision changed. “I think the context changed when everyone realises it’s gonna be a film for everyone and I think everyone was on board,” Sabia revealed.

Mirka’s decision reflects her will to stand by her husband, even if it means going out of her comfort zone. This could have been the probable reason why Roger Federer’s former coach praised her role in the legend’s life.
‘“Mirka doesn’t get enough credit,’ Roger Federer’s former coach reveals
While Roger Federer has been open about the support his wife has given him, Paul Annacone believes her influence is underrated. “Mirka doesn’t get enough credit. She’s amazing. She really is someone that understood tennis and understands her husband so well, not only with the tennis but also with who he became as an icon. She’s incredible that she managed all that.” Similar sentiments were echoed by the Swiss Maestro himself.

The two first met in 2000 and eventually tied the knot in 2009, with the Swiss ATP legend highlighting the role of his wife in shaping him into what he is today, “She’s been there when I had no titles and she’s still here 89 titles later, so she had a big part to play in [the win]. She knows it, I know it, everybody knows it.”
As the documentary is all set to release soon, the fans are excited to explore how the last few days unfolded in the legend’s career. Meanwhile, the film promises to be an impressive highlight of the role of Federer’s love, family, and friends.
