“More Important Than Ever”: Andy Murray Reflects on the Impact of Tokyo Olympics 2020

It’s time for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and fans seem really exhilarated about the event. While World No.1 Novak Djokovic will try to come one step closer to his Golden Calendar Slam, all the eyes will also be on the defending champion, Andy Murray.

Former World No.1 Andy Murray is a part of Great Britain’s tennis team that will be playing at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Even though he is not enjoying the best of his form, Murray revealed what the Olympic Games mean to him in a recent interview.

“The Olympics mean a huge amount to me and it’s a massive honor to be able to compete at a fourth Games in Tokyo. Leading Team GB at the opening ceremony in Rio was one of the highlights of my career and winning in 2012 on home ground was an incredible moment,” said Murray.

This will be the fourth time when Murray will be playing at the Olympics. Interestingly, it’ll be the second time when he’ll start as the defending champion after securing Gold medals at the London Olympics 2012 and at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016- both times in the singles category.

“Going to a second Olympics as defending champion is exciting and I am looking forward to the challenge. The Games are the biggest competition in the world and as athletes. We train hard for moments like this. Tokyo 2020 in 2021 is unique, falling during the pandemic and we have seen incredible resilience from athletes, fans, and all those involved in making this happen,” added the British player.

“Overcoming barriers and difficulties is what defines competing at this level”- Andy Murray

Murray highlighted that the world is still going through a tough time due to the coronavirus pandemic. According to him, in such a situation, the Olympics are acting as a link to connect people with the different sports once again.

“Overcoming barriers and difficulties is what defines competing at this level, the ups and the downs. In so many ways, right now it’s more important than ever that people around the world get to reconnect to the raw emotion of sport. Watch incredible performances and celebrate the achievement of athletes coming from around the world,” concluded the 2-time Grand Slam champion.
