For decades, the world of professional tennis has been primarily governed by two major bodies, the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). These organizations played a major role in shaping the sport, overseeing tournaments, and representing the interests of tennis players worldwide. However, Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic, back in 2019, came up with a new player-centric approach, marking a departure from the traditional governance by the ATP and WTA.
The Serbinator’s idea of the PTPA was successful in gathering attention and support from key figures in the tennis world. Recently, former French player Gilles Simon shared his endorsements and expressions of support for the PTPA. Gilles’ words, being firm and keeping ATP on target, came out to be a great surprise for the fans.

In a recent statement, French tennis player Gilles Simon expressed his support for Novak Djokovic’s efforts to create a new players’ union in the world of professional tennis. Simon, two years after presenting his support for the PTPA, shared a bold verdict, repeating his support for Djokovic’s association, along with distinguishing it from the ATP.
Simon pointed out that the current governing body, the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals), does not always act in the best interests of the players. Caught in a conversation recently, he mentioned, “Novak’s union, if all players joined, would represent 100% of the players in negotiations. The players would be independent, then you have to negotiate with the ATP, with the tournaments, what needs to be negotiated. There, the ATP which represents us does not represent the players. It represents itself first, and even when it negotiates with the Grand Slams, it represents itself.”

According to the former French player, the main idea behind Djokovic’s proposed union is to establish an organization that truly represents the players, ensuring that their voices and concerns are prioritized. Gilles Simon’s act of supporting Novak Djokovic’s association, the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association), highlights the growing support for a more player-driven approach in professional tennis, with the ultimate goal of securing a better future for all tennis professionals. However, the 38-year-old wasn’t the only one to support Djokovic’s idea of a PTPA.

However, his perspective, unlike Simon’s, wasn’t totally inclined towards the support of PTPA or against the ATP. He mentioned, “I’m not as big of a critique of the PTPA as maybe others are, because I do see an avenue, see an opportunity, and anyone that’s standing up for the rights of the players, it’s a good thing.” Tiley’s acceptance of the importance of associations like PTPA underscores the growing recognition of the need for strong player representation in the tennis world and the efforts being made to ensure that players’ voices are heard and their rights protected.
