One of the best players from Germany, Boris Becker faces an uncertain future. The former World No. 1, who claimed bankruptcy in 2017 might be incarcerated for up to 7 years, depending on the verdict of the case against him. He is accused of concealing his Wimbledon and Australian Open trophies, several properties, and around $2.3 million dollars, in regards to his bankruptcy issue.  At the time when he declared bankruptcy, his debts were estimated at up to £50 million.

The six-time Grand Slam winner’s trial is taking place at the Southwark Crown Court, in London.

This is not Becker’s first brush with the law. In 2002, a Munich court sentenced him to a two-year suspended prison sentence. He was penalized an additional fine of 300,000 euros, for tax evasion of around 1.7 million euros.

Becker is one of the most popular tennis players in the world, more so because of his dynamic personality on the court. He won his first Major at the age of 17. Since then he has more or less been in the news, for reasons good or bad. Notably, in his post-retirement life, he was most well known for coaching World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, and playing a considerable role in making him one of the best clutch players on the tour.

The judge and the jury summarised the case for nearly 4 hours and left after 3 pm German time. The process is supposed to continue after 11 am. The tennis star is accused of hiding a lot of assets regarding his bankruptcy claims, even though he denies them.

This time, however, he has denied 1 count of concealing debt, 2 counts of removing property required by the receiver, 5 counts of failing to disclose details of his estate, and 7 charges of concealing property. On top of all this, he also has denied 9 counts of failing to disclose the trophies.

The court received information that he had not disclosed his properties in Germany and London and that fact that he moves thousands of pounds to other accounts involving his wife and estranged wife’s accounts. He also did not reveal anything about the 75,000 shares in the AI firm Breaking Data Corp.

The prosecutor declared Becker guilty on all 24 counts. However, his lawyers said that Becker was unaware of his finances, trophies, and properties, and the concealing of them was not done on purpose. He will have to face jail time if the jury concurs with the judges’ statement.
