American WTA star Jessica Pegula‘s bad luck continues. After withdrawing from the Stuttgart Open, Pegula was hoping to participate in the Madrid Open. However, a sudden injury stopped this WTA star from making her clay court season a memorable one.
In her recent Instagram story, Pegula shared an update with her fans before the Madrid Open. Pegula wrote- “Hi guys not a great update but I got hurt this past week before Madrid and unfortunately not ready to play. Thankful for some extra time at home and hope to be back ASAP.” The American WTA star last participated in the Bille Jean King Cup and defeated Belgium in Orlando.
While she had plans to attend the ongoing Stuttgart Open, the time constraints and the distance from the United States forced her to withdraw. After withdrawing from the Stuttgart Open, Pegula said- “Yeah, I pulled out of Stuttgart a couple of days ago just because the turnaround is just too tough, I was thinking I could maybe go and play, but the flight situation wasn’t great getting there. I’d have to leave tonight (Sunday). I just didn’t really feel like it was worth it. Plus it kind of extends my trip into Europe a week to 10 days earlier.”

As Pegula withdrew from the Stuttgart Open, she expressed her wish to play in Madrid. She stated– “I just wanted to get a really good kind of week at home on the clay, back to clay, to prep for Madrid, Rome and French.” However, now it seems like Pegula’s Madrid dream is over. However, did you know that the American WTA star invited controversy in last year’s Madrid Open as she criticized the organizers for an interesting aspect?
Jessica Pegula bashed the Madrid Open organizers last year for not letting the doubles finalists make presentation speeches
Last year Pegula paired with Coco Gauff and participated in the doubles segment of the Madrid Open. While they were defeated by Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad, Pegula was disappointed for a different reason. The finalists in the tournament were not allowed to make presentation speeches. This American WTA star said– “I don’t know what century everyone was living in when they made that decision, Or how they had a conversation and decided, ‘Wow, this is a great decision and there’s going to be no-backlash against this’, I’ve never heard in my life we wouldn’t be able to speak. It was really disappointing. In a $10,000 final you would speak.”
