When it comes to tennis, there is hardly anyone who has made an impact like Roger Federer. But his journey was never easy. There were moments when he had to sit back and think about what was right and what was not. But, despite this, his wife, Mirka Federer, was always by his side.

Reflecting on the same, Roger Federer once revealed how his wife played a crucial role and helped him get some clarity at a time when he needed it the most. Federer, who was completely new to the situation, did not know how to react. In his biography ‘The Master: The Brilliant Career of Roger Federer’ written by Christopher Clarey, Federer shared how his wife supported him.

In the whirlwind of 2009, Roger Federer found himself in a state of shock and confusion as he and his wife Mirka stepped on a journey filled with tennis triumphs and upcoming parenthood. In January, Mirka announced that the couple was expecting their first child. However, as Mirka’s due date came closer, Federer, amidst Grand Slam tournaments, admitted that he was quite confused about how he would tackle the situation.

“I was scared. You know how it is. After week twenty-five, you never know when a baby can come, so at the beginning of the French Open I was thinking that we have to get through two Grand Slams,” said Federer while remembering the saga that he went through back then.

However, amidst the tension, the couple’s decision-making during the French Open and Wimbledon helped them balance Federer’s tennis commitments with upcoming responsibilities.

Amidst the ongoing situations, Mirka’s confidence played a crucial role in their story. Even as Wimbledon’s discussions and labor went ahead, she insisted, “Well, you go play the match and you come back. You can’t just run away from the match, it’s impossible.”

Despite the tight schedule, Federer emerged victorious at Wimbledon, marking the end of a tense period that included Paris, Wimbledon, and a hospital stay. Mirka’s pregnancy revelation in January, followed by the surprising news of twins, added to Federer’s astonishment and determination.

Federer suggested he was overly protective because it was the first time he experienced parenthood. “I was pretty, like, shocked in a good way,” he said. “My head was spinning, and I was making jokes to Mirka: ‘Be careful! Don’t lift that! You should be lying down!’ And she was like, ‘Stop it! Don’t talk to me like I’m so pregnant!”

When the Swiss great got to know they were expecting twins, he couldn’t contain the excitement. Playing in the Australian Open back then, he said that he went ahead and defeated Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets.

In his post-match interview, he suggested that maybe his twins gave him the wings and strength to conquer his opponent. “The twins gave me wings, right?” Federer said. “It was like, okay, or anything. That was a good start. It gave me confidence,” said Federer.
