We are seeing the best of Novak Djokovic in recent years, aren’t we? The Serb has hardly got his footing wrong this season. Earlier this season, he won back-to-back Grand Slam titles, the Australian Open, and the French Open, taking his major tally to 23. Additionally, he also won ATP 250 title in Adelaide. Now, Djokovic is on the cusp of another major victory.

Earlier today, the former World Number One produced a masterclass performance at Wimbledon as he overcame the challenge of Jannik Sinner of Italy. In what was a straightforward win, Djokovic had a flawless performance to reach yet another Grand Slam final. It was his 35th major final overall, overcoming Chris Evert’s record. However, he had a not-so-ideal scenario midway through his semifinal match against Sinner.

During the second set, the umpire found the 23-time Grand Slam champion guilty of extended grunting, thereby handing him a point penalty. The former believed Djokovic caused a hindrance in play, thereby awarding a point to Sinner.

The incident was shared on social media and thousands of fans reacted to it. American tennis star, Taylor Fritz also gave his views about the incident. Taking to Twitter, he said, “I can’t speak to this specific instance because I didn’t see it. Novak doesn’t come to my mind when I think of this rule, BUT some players I can think of extend/delay grunts A LOT on big points to put you off and it needs to be called more by umpires.”

During the post-match press conference, Sinner was also asked to comment on this matter. Replying to it, the Italian said, “It’s the umpire’s call. Obviously he hit the ball & after he was shouting quite long & loud.. I was quite focused about the ball. Players do this when we’re quite sure we win the point. Bublik against Andrey was similar.”
