Novak Djokovic was not liked much by the tennis world when he was a new player on the professional tour. He made statements that rubbed players and other personalities the wrong way. One instance took place much earlier in his career in 2008 after the Djoker called Andy Roddick out after he was the victor in their bout.

Nick Kyrgios calls Novak Djokovic GOAT

In the 2008 US Open, one quarterfinal match saw Roddick lose to Djokovic in four sets. The Serbinator shut him down during the game and would go on to do so after the match as well. Before their match, Roddick had commented that Djokovic had faked 16 injuries in his previous bout, which was not taken lightly by the 24-time grand slam champion.

After their match ended, he said, “Well, obviously, you know Andy was saying I have 16 injuries in the last match. Obviously, I don’t, right?”. He then said, “I know they [the crowd] are already against me because they think I am faking everything. That’s not nice to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries and that I’m faking it.”

While the moment with Roddick ended up becoming highly dramatic, the two players would resolve their differences as soon as the post-match press conference took place.

The Djoker and A-Rod spoke privately after the on-court interview ended. During his post-match press conference, Djokovic, who was apologetic, admitted that he had misinterpreted Roddick’s joke.

Unfortunately, Andy made a statement, and I don’t think it was intentional,” he said. “He made a joke and it was a misunderstanding. I exaggerated and I reacted bad in that moment. I apologise if I reacted like that. It was just impulsive and I had a lot of emotions in the last two days.”

This ended the saga between Djokovic and Roddick but would be one of many controversies in which Djokovic was involved.
